Doctors at The University of Kansas Health System urge people to protect themselves and loved ones as a significant winter storm approaches.

Our facilities are open and our staff is ready to care for patients, even during inclement weather. Out of an abundance of caution, we have begun inviting patients with scheduled in-person visits on Monday to convert to telehealth if appropriate to their healthcare needs.

Your safety is important. If you have an appointment scheduled, please stay safe and give yourself plenty of time to arrive. If patients are unable to make in-person appointments, please call 913-588-1227. Patients having a medical emergency, dial 911.

We have gathered interviews with physicians for your use:

• Pediatric Critical Care physician Dr. Shawn Sood (pronounced:Sued) discusses frostnip in children and how to treat it. Frostnip is the stage before frostbite.

• Emergency Medicine physicians Dr. Ally Briggs and Dr. Bryan Beaver discuss cold weather and frostbite. They discuss how wind and humidity play a role.

• Plastic surgeon Dr. Richard Korentager (pronounced: CORE-n-tay-jer) talks about the importance of dressing in layers and how the young and old are more vulnerable in cold weather.

• Cardiologist Dr. Taimur Safder (pronounced: tih-MOOR Saf-dur)discusses heart health with cold weather. Lower temperatures constrict blood vessels. This can make activities like snow shoveling and walking to your mailbox more dangerous if you have a heart condition.

Stay safe and please let us know if you need anything else.
